We have applied to sponsor three young men from Somalia who are currently living in a refugee camp in Kenya. These men are cousins, and have family in Burlington, Vermont. Having family here is wonderful, as it means that they will have housing and family support once they arrive in the US. Our Welcome Corps team will supplement that support.
Their Aunt summarized their story:
Abdirahman is 27 years old, Yussuf is 23 years old, and Aden is 28 years were born in middle Juba, Bu’aale Somali. In 2011, the three cousins had to leave their homeland due to the harsh persecution by militants. These militants were forcing young boys like them into committing crimes against their own people. It was a difficult and dangerous time, and their family decided to flee to find safety.
They ended up at the Ifo Refugee Camp in Kenya, where they faced a new set of challenges. Despite the hardships, Abdirahman, Yussuf, and Aden were determined to continue their education. In the refugee camp, they managed to complete high school, but sadly, there is no opportunity for higher education beyond a high school diploma.
Yussuf, Abdirahman and Aden were not ready to give up on their dreams. They dreamed of a better future, one where they could further their education and build a life beyond the struggles they faced. Their hearts were set on the United States of America, a place where they believed they could find opportunities for higher education and a chance for a brighter tomorrow.
The three cousins worked hard, showing resilience and determination in the face of adversity. They knew that education was the key to unlocking a better future. With hope in their hearts, Abdirahman, Yussuf, and Aden are dreaming to come to the United States, where they aimed to pursue higher education and build a life that would break free from the chains of their difficult past.
