Bertine found safety in the Maputo refugee camp, but dreamed of continuing his education. He resettled in Wyoming, became a high school teacher, and is now an elementary school principal.
On a trip to Greece to learn about the refugee crisis, a Yale University class met Zakaria. They kept in touch and used their international alumni network to assist Zakaria as he journeyed through Europe and settled in Spain.
